Make these Crispy Fried Goat Cheese Balls for an appetizer everyone loves. We plan the recipe, and Jacob perfects the frying for a creamy inside and golden outside. Drizzle with honey before serving.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 oz soft goat cheese, chilled
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs, beaten
  • 1 cup panko breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon black pepper
  • Vegetable oil, for frying
  • 1/4 cup honey, for drizzling

Instructions

  1. Take the chilled goat cheese and roll it into small, uniform balls (about 1 inch in diameter). Place the balls on a parchment-lined plate and freeze for 30 minutes to firm them up.
  2. Set up a standard breading station with three shallow dishes. Place the flour in the first dish. Whisk the eggs in the second dish. Mix the panko breadcrumbs, salt, and pepper in the third dish.
  3. Working quickly, take the chilled cheese balls one at a time. Dredge each ball in flour, shaking off excess. Dip it into the beaten egg, letting excess drip off. Finally, coat it thoroughly in the panko mixture, pressing gently so the crumbs adhere well.
  4. Return the coated balls to the freezer for another 15 minutes. This step helps prevent the cheese from leaking during frying.
  5. Pour about 2 inches of vegetable oil into a heavy-bottomed pot or deep fryer. Heat the oil to 350°F (175°C). Use a thermometer to monitor the temperature.
  6. Carefully lower 4-5 cheese balls into the hot oil using a slotted spoon. Do not overcrowd the pot.
  7. Fry for 1 to 2 minutes, turning occasionally, until the coating is deep golden brown and crisp.
  8. Remove the fried balls immediately and place them on a wire rack set over a paper towel-lined baking sheet to drain excess oil.
  9. Arrange the warm goat cheese balls on a serving platter. Drizzle generously with honey just before you serve them.

Notes

  • For an easier cleanup, you can bake these at 400°F (200°C) for 10-12 minutes, flipping halfway, though the texture will be less uniformly crisp than frying.
  • If you prefer a spicy kick, mix a pinch of red pepper flakes into the honey drizzle.
  • Ensure your cheese balls are very cold before breading and frying; this is the key to keeping their shape.
