A quick method for cooking tuna steaks to a desired doneness.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 (6 ounce) tuna steaks, about 1 inch thick
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon sesame seeds (optional)

Instructions

  1. Pat the tuna steaks dry with paper towels.
  2. Rub both sides of the steaks with olive oil, salt, and pepper. Sprinkle with sesame seeds if using.
  3. Heat a heavy skillet (cast iron works well) over medium-high heat until very hot.
  4. Place the tuna steaks in the hot skillet. Sear for 1.5 to 2 minutes per side for rare (cool pink center). Increase time slightly for medium or well-done.
  5. Remove the steaks from the skillet and let them rest for 3 minutes before slicing or serving.

Notes

  • For best results, use sushi-grade or high-quality, fresh tuna steaks.
  • Adjust cooking time based on the thickness of your steaks and your preferred internal temperature.
  • You can substitute avocado oil for olive oil.
