Ingredients
Scale
1 pound ground beef
1 small onion, chopped
1/2 cup green bell pepper, chopped
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon onion powder
1 teaspoon dry mustard
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
1/2 cup ketchup
1/4 cup water
2 tablespoons brown sugar
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
8 slices Texas Toast (thick cut bread)
4 slices cheddar cheese
2 tablespoons butter, softened
1 clove garlic, minced
Instructions
Brown the ground beef in a large skillet over medium heat. Drain off any excess fat.
Add the chopped onion and bell pepper to the skillet. Cook until the vegetables soften, about 5 minutes.
Stir in the garlic powder, onion powder, dry mustard, salt, and pepper. Cook for 1 minute.
Pour in the ketchup, water, brown sugar, and Worcestershire sauce. Stir well to combine.
Bring the mixture to a simmer. Reduce the heat to low and cook uncovered for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, allowing the sauce to thicken slightly.
While the filling simmers, prepare the Texas Toast. In a small bowl, mix the softened butter with the minced garlic.
Spread the garlic butter evenly on one side of each slice of Texas Toast.
Place the toast, butter-side down, in a clean skillet or on a griddle over medium heat. Toast until golden brown and crisp, about 2 to 3 minutes per side.
Place one slice of toast, toasted-side up, on a plate. Spoon a generous amount of the sloppy joe filling over the toast.
Top the filling with one slice of cheddar cheese. Place the second slice of toast on top to form a sandwich. Repeat for the remaining servings.
Serve immediately.
Notes
For extra flavor, you can broil the open-faced sandwiches for 1-2 minutes after adding the cheese until it is fully melted and bubbly.
If you prefer a sweeter filling, increase the brown sugar to 3 tablespoons.
You can substitute ground turkey or ground pork for the ground beef.
