This is the simplest, freshest, and fastest tomato basil pasta recipe you will ever make. Jacob walks you through creating a bright, flavorful sauce using quality ingredients. It is perfect for a weeknight meal when you need something delicious right away.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound pasta (spaghetti or linguine works well)
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 (14.5 ounce) cans diced tomatoes, undrained
  • 1 teaspoon salt, or to taste
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 cup fresh basil leaves, roughly chopped
  • Parmesan cheese, for grating (optional)

Instructions

  1. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the pasta and cook according to package directions until al dente. Reserve about 1 cup of the pasta water before draining.
  2. While the pasta cooks, heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and cook for about 30 seconds until fragrant. Do not let the garlic brown.
  3. Pour in the diced tomatoes, including the liquid. Add the salt and pepper. Bring the sauce to a simmer and cook for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  4. Drain the cooked pasta and add it directly to the skillet with the tomato sauce.
  5. Add about 1/2 cup of the reserved pasta water to the skillet. Toss everything together until the sauce coats the pasta nicely. Add more pasta water if the sauce seems too dry.
  6. Remove the skillet from the heat. Stir in the fresh basil.
  7. Serve immediately. Top each serving with freshly grated Parmesan cheese, if desired.

Notes

  • Use good quality canned tomatoes; they make a difference in a simple sauce.
  • Taste and adjust salt and pepper before serving.
  • If you prefer a smoother sauce, you can briefly blend the sauce before adding the pasta.
