You need a quick, single-serving dessert? This classic chocolate mug cake is rich, gooey, and ready in the microwave in just minutes. It is the perfect one mug wonder for late-night cravings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 Tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 4 Tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 2 Tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • Pinch of salt
  • 3 Tablespoons milk (any kind)
  • 1 Tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 Tablespoon chocolate chips (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a standard 12-ounce microwave-safe mug, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt until no lumps remain.
  2. Add the milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients.
  3. Use a small fork to mix everything thoroughly until you have a smooth batter. Scrape down the sides of the mug.
  4. Stir in the chocolate chips, if you are using them.
  5. Place the mug in the microwave. Cook on high power for 60 to 90 seconds. Cooking time varies based on microwave wattage; start checking at 60 seconds.
  6. The cake is done when the top looks set but is still slightly moist. Do not overcook, or it will become dry.
  7. Let the mug cake cool for one minute before eating directly from the mug.

Notes

  • For a fudgier texture, reduce the milk by 1/2 teaspoon.
  • You can substitute the vegetable oil with melted butter for a richer flavor.
  • Top your warm mug cake with a scoop of ice cream or a dusting of powdered sugar.
  • This recipe is a great base for a quick sweet treat; try adding a teaspoon of instant coffee for a mocha flavor.
