Learn to create a beautiful lattice pie crust with a delicious apple filling. This recipe guides you through each step, perfect for adding a decorative touch to your homemade pies.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 recipe for double pie crust
  • 6 cups thinly sliced, peeled apples (about 6-7 medium apples)
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon butter, cut into small pieces
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar (for sprinkling)

Instructions

  1. Prepare your double pie crust according to your favorite recipe. Divide the dough in half.
  2. Roll out one half of the dough and place it in your pie plate. Trim the edges, leaving about a 1/2-inch overhang.
  3. In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, 3/4 cup sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice. Toss gently to coat the apples evenly.
  4. Pour the apple filling into the pie crust. Dot the top of the filling with the small pieces of butter.
  5. Roll out the second half of the dough. Cut it into even strips (about 1/2 to 3/4 inch wide).
  6. Arrange the dough strips over the apple filling in a lattice pattern. Weave the strips over and under each other to create the lattice.
  7. Trim the ends of the lattice strips to match the overhang of the bottom crust. Crimp the edges of the top and bottom crusts together to seal.
  8. Brush the top of the lattice crust with the beaten egg wash. Sprinkle with the remaining 1 tablespoon of sugar.
  9. Bake in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for 45-55 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbly. If the crust starts to brown too quickly, you can loosely tent it with foil.
  10. Let the pie cool for at least 2-3 hours before slicing and serving to allow the filling to set.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, you can add a pinch of cloves or allspice to the apple filling.
  • If your dough is too sticky to work with, chill it for 15-30 minutes before rolling.
  • Ensure your apples are evenly sliced for consistent cooking.
  • A pastry brush is helpful for applying the egg wash evenly.
