This is a recipe for a classic, hearty Split Pea Soup with Ham, developed through the planning of Amelia and the intuitive cooking of Jacob. It is a comforting, smoky dish perfect for a planned, yet delicious, meal project.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound dried split peas, rinsed
  • 8 cups chicken or vegetable broth
  • 1 ham hock or 1 cup diced smoked ham
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 2 carrots, diced
  • 2 celery stalks, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 bay leaf
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Rinse the split peas thoroughly under cold water.
  2. In a large pot or Dutch oven, combine the rinsed split peas, broth, ham hock (if using), onion, carrots, celery, garlic, thyme, and bay leaf.
  3. Bring the mixture to a boil over high heat.
  4. Reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer for 1.5 to 2 hours, or until the peas are very tender and have broken down, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking.
  5. If using diced ham instead of a hock, add it during the last 30 minutes of cooking.
  6. Remove the bay leaf and the ham hock (if used). Shred any meat from the ham hock and return it to the pot.
  7. If you prefer a smoother soup, use an immersion blender to pulse a few times until you reach your desired consistency.
  8. Season with salt and pepper to your taste.
  9. Serve hot.

Notes

  • Rinsing the peas removes any dust or debris.
  • For a smokier flavor, increase the amount of smoked ham.
  • If the soup becomes too thick, add a little water or extra broth until it thins to your preference.
  • This soup freezes very well for future meal preparation.
