Ingredients
Scale
6 medium apples (like Fuji or Gala), peeled, cored, and quartered
1/2 cup water
1 teaspoon lemon juice (optional)
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional)
Instructions
Place the apple pieces, water, and lemon juice (if using) into a large saucepan.
Bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat.
Reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and let it simmer for 15 to 20 minutes. Stir occasionally.
The apples are done when they are very tender and easily mashable with a fork.
If you prefer smooth applesauce, use an immersion blender or transfer the mixture to a regular blender and process until smooth. For chunky applesauce, mash the apples lightly with a fork or potato masher right in the pot.
Stir in the cinnamon (if using).
Remove from heat and let it cool slightly before serving or storing.
Notes
Use a mix of sweet and tart apples for the best flavor.
If the apples seem too dry during simmering, add water, one tablespoon at a time.
This recipe makes naturally sweet applesauce; taste before considering adding sweeteners like maple syrup.
Store cooled applesauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week.
