Make classic, fluffy French toast quickly using this simple recipe. This method yields golden-brown slices with a custardy center, perfect for any morning.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 slices thick bread (like challah or brioche)
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup milk (whole or 2%)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon butter, for cooking

Instructions

  1. In a shallow dish, whisk together the eggs, milk, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and sugar until well combined. This is your batter.
  2. Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium heat. Add half of the butter and let it melt until it coats the surface.
  3. Dip one slice of bread into the batter, coating both sides quickly. Do not let it soak too long, or it will become soggy.
  4. Place the coated bread onto the hot skillet. Cook for 3 to 4 minutes per side, until golden brown and cooked through.
  5. Remove the cooked French toast and keep warm while you cook the remaining slices, adding more butter to the skillet as needed.
  6. Serve immediately with your preferred toppings.

Notes

  • Use slightly stale bread for the best texture; it absorbs the batter better without falling apart.
  • For a richer flavor, substitute half of the milk with heavy cream.
  • If you prefer a crispier edge, use slightly less milk in the batter mixture.
