This easy stovetop apple cinnamon oatmeal recipe delivers a comforting, cozy breakfast perfect for cool mornings. We use simple ingredients to create a flavorful, warm bowl topped with a quick maple glaze. This is one of our favorite completed projects from the Taste Portfolio.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup rolled oats
  • 2 cups water or milk (dairy or non-dairy)
  • 1 large apple, peeled and diced
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup (for cooking)
  • 1 tablespoon butter or coconut oil (optional)
  • For Glaze: 1 tablespoon maple syrup, 1 teaspoon water
  • Optional Toppings: Chopped pecans, extra cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Combine the oats, water or milk, diced apple, cinnamon, salt, and 2 tablespoons of maple syrup in a medium saucepan. If using butter or coconut oil, add it now.
  2. Bring the mixture to a gentle boil over medium heat, stirring occasionally.
  3. Reduce the heat to low once boiling. Simmer for 5 to 7 minutes, stirring frequently until the oats are creamy and the apples are tender.
  4. While the oatmeal simmers, prepare the glaze: Mix 1 tablespoon of maple syrup with 1 teaspoon of water in a small bowl.
  5. Remove the oatmeal from the heat. Let it stand for 1 minute to thicken slightly.
  6. Divide the oatmeal into serving bowls. Drizzle the prepared maple glaze over the top of each serving.
  7. Add optional toppings like pecans if you wish. Serve immediately.

Notes

  • For a thicker oatmeal, use less liquid initially; you can always add more during cooking.
  • Jacob prefers using half water and half almond milk for extra creaminess.
  • This recipe is easily scaled up if you are meal prepping for the week. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
  • To make this gluten-free, ensure your rolled oats are certified gluten-free.
