Ingredients
Water: 1 cup
Black tea bags (strong brew): 2
Cinnamon stick: 1
Cardamom pods: 3, lightly crushed
Cloves: 2 whole
Ginger: 1/2 inch piece, thinly sliced
Vanilla extract: 1 teaspoon
Milk (dairy or non-dairy): 1 cup
Sweetener (sugar, honey, or maple syrup): to taste
Instructions
Combine water, black tea bags, cinnamon stick, cardamom pods, cloves, and ginger in a small saucepan.
Bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat.
Once boiling, reduce heat to low and simmer for 5 minutes to let the spices infuse.
Remove the saucepan from the heat. Discard the tea bags.
Stir in the vanilla extract and your desired sweetener.
Add the milk to the saucepan. Heat gently over low heat until hot, but do not boil.
Pour the chai mixture through a fine-mesh sieve into mugs to remove the spices.
Serve immediately and enjoy your perfect homemade vanilla chai.
Notes
For an extra foamy top, use an immersion blender or milk frother after heating the milk.
Adjust the number of tea bags or simmering time to control the strength of your chai.
You can substitute regular milk with oat milk for an extra creamy texture.
