This is the ultimate creamy and flavorful classic egg salad recipe, perfected through planning and taste-testing. We include celery for crunch and offer simple ways to customize this staple for your perfect bite.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 large eggs, hard-boiled
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise (or preferred creamy base)
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon yellow mustard (for tang)
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped celery
  • 2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh dill (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt, or to taste
  • 1/8 teaspoon black pepper, freshly ground

Instructions

  1. Peel the cooled, hard-boiled eggs.
  2. Place the eggs in a medium bowl. Coarsely chop the eggs with a fork or knife until you reach your desired texture. Some prefer small chunks, others prefer smoother.
  3. Add the mayonnaise, Dijon mustard, yellow mustard, chopped celery, fresh dill (if using), and lemon juice to the bowl.
  4. Gently fold the ingredients together until just combined. Do not overmix; you want some texture remaining.
  5. Season the salad with salt and black pepper. Taste and adjust seasonings as needed.
  6. Cover the bowl and chill in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes before serving. This allows the flavors to meld.
  7. Serve on bread, crackers, or over lettuce.

Notes

  • For a keto-friendly version, substitute mayonnaise with avocado oil mayonnaise and omit any added sweet relish.
  • To add creaminess and healthy fat, substitute 1/4 cup of the mayonnaise with 1/4 mashed ripe avocado.
  • For extra flavor complexity, add 1/2 teaspoon of onion powder or a pinch of smoked paprika.
  • If you prefer a smoother texture, use an electric hand mixer on low speed for a few seconds after adding the wet ingredients.
