A recipe for buttery, tender snowball cookies coated in a sweet cinnamon sugar mixture, resulting in a melt-in-your-mouth texture perfect for holidays.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup powdered sugar, for rolling (optional, for a dual coating)
  • For Coating: 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • For Coating: 2 tablespoons ground cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, beat the softened butter and 1/2 cup granulated sugar together until light and fluffy.
  3. Beat in the vanilla extract.
  4. Gradually add the flour and salt. Mix on low speed until just combined into a soft dough. Do not overmix.
  5. Roll the dough into small, uniform balls, about 1 inch in diameter. Place them on the prepared baking sheets.
  6. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes, or until the edges are barely set and the bottoms are lightly golden. They should remain pale on top.
  7. Remove cookies from the oven and let them cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes.
  8. While the cookies cool slightly, prepare the coating: In a shallow dish, mix the 1/2 cup granulated sugar and 2 tablespoons of ground cinnamon thoroughly.
  9. If using the optional powdered sugar step, roll the warm cookies lightly in the powdered sugar first, then immediately roll them in the cinnamon sugar mixture until fully coated. If skipping powdered sugar, roll the warm cookies directly in the cinnamon sugar mixture.
  10. Transfer the coated cookies to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

  • For a softer, more traditional snowball texture, you can roll the cookies twice: once while warm in the cinnamon sugar, and again after they have cooled completely.
  • If you prefer a nut-free cookie, omit any nuts; this recipe does not require them.
  • Store cooled cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to one week.
