Ingredients
Scale
1 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup water
1/2 cup milk (or dairy-free alternative)
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 tablespoon unsalted butter (optional, for extra richness)
Instructions
In a medium saucepan, whisk together the sugar, cocoa powder, and salt until combined.
Add the water and milk to the saucepan. Whisk constantly over medium heat until the sugar dissolves and the mixture begins to simmer.
Reduce the heat to low and continue to cook, stirring frequently, for 3 to 5 minutes. The sauce will thicken slightly as it cooks. Do not boil rapidly.
Remove the saucepan from the heat. Stir in the vanilla extract and the butter, if using, until the butter melts completely and the sauce is smooth.
Pour the sauce into a heatproof jar or container. The sauce will thicken more as it cools.
Use warm as a topping or cool completely for a thicker consistency suitable for drizzling.
Notes
For a shinier sauce, stir in 1/4 teaspoon of instant espresso powder with the dry ingredients.
If the sauce is too thick after cooling, whisk in a teaspoon of hot water or milk until you reach your desired consistency.
This sauce stores well in the refrigerator for up to two weeks. Reheat gently on the stovetop or in the microwave before serving.
